Happy Dolphins Are Free Dolphins

Shamika Prabhu :

Dear friends,

“No aquarium, no tank in a marine land, however spacious it may be, can begin to duplicate the conditions of the sea. And no dolphin who inhabits one of those aquariums or one of those marine lands can be considered normal “

The craze to ape the West, in lifestyle, in food or in the choice of recreation, is definitely bad news for the animals we share the world with. The latest fad is building of Ocean parks or Dolphinariums.

Increasing concern for animal welfare led to stricter regulations of keeping dolphins in captivity since 1970, and many dolphinariums have bitten the dust since then in most countries. All the efforts to save the dolphins seemed to be in vain, due to the ever increasing trend observed in several other countries like India, North America, Europe and Japan. Dolphinarium started evolving as a huge market to make money by the means of knowledge and amusement.

Proposed Dolphinariums in india:

Apart from the very ambitious project of a 150 Crore Doplhinarium in the Sindhudurg dstrict of Maharashtra, the other marine animal projects that have been reported are at :

  • Thane, Maharashtra
  • Greater Noida, UP
  • Kochi, Cochin

Despite the pressure from NGOs and even its own Ministtry of Environment and Forests ( MoEF ), the Maharashtra State Govt is defending its plan for a new water theme park and dolphinarium to be built on the Arabian Sea coastline.

Thane SPCA , as a member organisation of the Federation of Indian Animal Welfare Organisations, and as a member of its Governing Body is fully supporting, logistically and otherwise, a campaign against Indian states from setting up Dolphinariums – torture chambers for this most intelligent marine mammal.

It has been observed that visitors to marine parks and oceanariums learn nothing about these intelligent animals by watching them swim endlessly in circles or perform meangless tricks. In fact, childrenleave with the idea that it is acceptable to keep animals in captivity and allow tghem to be bored, cramped, lonely and far from their natural homes.

Please take a pledge not to expose your self or your family members and friends to such obnoxious shows of superirority. Do not support the Government to utilise your Entertainment taxes to be used for building these torture chambers for any animal.

Let your children learn about Nature from Nature, not from circuses and zoos. Down with Zoos and Captive Rearing of Animals.
