From The Horse’s Mouth

“There’s some hope in the world – and it’s worth fighting for.”

It never ceases to amaze me – just how much pure goodness there is in this world. If you’re blinking in disbelief, I don’t blame you – what with the sordid stories of darkness, rage, crime and unfettered evil that you come across every day. It’s easy to give in to depression. But my recent experiences have proven to me otherwise.

I am associated with Thane SPCA in the capacity of an Executive member handling their Social Networking and Communication. Living in another country, this is the best way I can contribute to the organisation.

I was in India for a couple of weeks recently and it’s as good a country as any to give people multiple reasons to despise it. It’s not just the increasing spate of cruelty and abuse. It’s about the overall anger that the common Indian seethes with, because of unaccountability, corruption, power games and so on and so forth.

In the midst of all this chaos, I had the good fortune of answering several rescue calls made to the Thane S.P.C.A. hotline. Each caller was an average middle class Indian citizen, genuinely worried for the injured, abused or homeless animal they were trying to help. The urgency in the voices of these people reached out to me wirelessly. In several instances, the callers offered to bring the animals in auto rickshaws or whatever mode of transport was available to them – across distances that would seem daunting to even seasoned Mumbai travellers.

And the icing on the cake was when I met with some of the organisation’s donors and well wishers. My word! What a fantastic lot of people they are! Financially well endowed, these individuals are embodiments of simplicity and selfless service. They were literally charged up about future plans for the organisation and radiated a brilliant positivity – the kind that could erase every ounce of negative, depressive thought plaguing the world and engender the effective betterment of society. I came back enriched, revived and empowered. I also came back stuffed choc-a-bloc with renewed hope. As long as there are people like these, who strive constantly and smilingly for the ‘good work’, spreading the cheer, hope and spiritual message of selfless service, I know goodness will prevail.

This is my message to everyone out there and especially people who care about animals and work for their welfare. The situation may be seemingly bleak and you may feel like we’re fast approaching the point of no return. The truth of the matter is, it’s not and we’re not. It’s quite the opposite. Compassion and empathy grow in leaps and bounds across the world, even as we speak. And so does the global will to fight for justice.

in the movie ‘The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers’, The protagonist Frodo Baggins and his best friend Samwise Gamgee are exhausted having to constantly battle increasing evil. And here is what Sam says :

Frodo  :  What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam      :  That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo… and it’s worth fighting for.

So you see, there’s never any turning back from compassion, justice and love. Because in the end, every life is Priceless . That’s what we hold on to – now and always.

In everlasting hope,

Twinks with Salman
