Thane district witnesses a large number of working equines , especially donkeys. They are used for construction sites and by the railways while laying down new lines. While in most municipalities, local NGOs do not fight for the cause of donkeys, Thane city has seen a sea change in attitude of owners towards their animals. All donkey owners are now registered with Thane SPCA, and bi annual awareness visits to the homes of the donkey owners ensure that the owners are kept on a leash. The owners themselves now bring their donkeys to the hospital for treatment and vaccination, and we make home visits when emergencies arise.
This is the story of one such emergency Dystokia case where the female donkey suddenly went into labour with a breach baby. Our ambulance rushed to the spot where she was grazing, managed to save the mother, but the baby had already died inside. The donkey was admitted to the hospital for some post natal care. This is heartening ! That a few 40 odd donkeys now are able to avail of medical care and treatment in Thane.
