Captain’s Hook

4 of them. All with hooks inside their oral cavity, or deep within.
Yes, these four heroes were presented to us one evening by the Mumbai Range Forest Office. They had been rescued from Chandivili, and they had hooks in common.

X rays revealed 2 hooks deeply embedded, while two were more manageable. One was immediately extracted by the medical staff, but we were advised to hold on the other three. After 5 days of observation and antibiotic treatment, the three went under the precision knife of Dr. Dinesh Vinherkar, the turtle specialist. One hero was critical for 72 hours, but resilient species as they are, she bobbed up after 72 hours and started feeding.

Meanwhile, as a preparation to release them, the major lakes in Thane were studied and discussed. Once the venue for release was finalised, after two more weeks later of medication and feeding, the four were released along with three others in the presence of the DCF Thane, DCF Mangrove cell and their officers in a well inhabited soft shell turtle habitat without any fanfare. Because after all, the issue at hand is not publicity, but only welfare of the tiny animals.
