Gen X – Reason for Hope

“We are, indeed, often cruel and evil. Nobody can deny this. But we are also capable of the most noble, generous, and heroic behaviour. There is a powerful force unleashed when young people resolve to make a change.” ~ Jane Goodall, Reason for Hope: A spiritual Journey

As always, Jane Goodall’s wisdom shines through our lives, and I see that especially in our line of work. Young people (school and college students particularly) have been showing an increasing interest in the work we do – our animal hospital and shelter, our rehoming and rehabilitation efforts, the cruelty cases we fight – everything. In recent months, we have been privy to these students asking questions, their curiosity piqued, their compassion kindled. They have expressed a desire to take a keen interest in the cause and have been making efforts to do their bit as well.

As part of their curriculum, several colleges like Wellingkar College, Chinai College, J B Institute of Management, Thakur College, IBMS  etc. offer students the chance to get ‘down and dirty’ so to speak, to seek out social causes that call to them and then to get involved in these causes by volunteering time or participating in other ways. And to our pleasant surprise, students from these institutes have become interested in animal welfare and have approached us to make documentaries for instance. One such example was a documentary made a couple of years ago by students on Thane S.P.C.A., its overview and functioning – link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7Fy94Hw3Fc

A student from Welingkar Institute also filmed another ‘interview documentary’ recently – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdUJsb2SpAU and all this interest has not been limited to filming documentaries.Students of architecture from Pillai College for example, have started developing their thesis papers on animal hospital modules – and we can say with certainty (based on our interactions with these youngsters) that this academic interest is not merely aesthetic – it stems from genuine love for animals. These students are actually looking forward to state-of-the-art institutions being built in the future to cater to the needs of animals.

“It’s so very very heartening to see that animal welfare is inching its way into Gen X,” says Shakuntala Majumdar, President, Thane S.P.C.A. “Individuals belonging to a generation which is adult enough to make decisions, now know animals to be sentient beings – they acknowledge the fact that animals have rights of their own, and are not merely meant to be exploited as products for food, clothing or experimentation.”

And as long as our young people care, there is hope.

Best wishes,

Shreyasi Majumdar.
