From The Horse’s Mouth

Camaraderie + Unconditional Love = Hope

“No one can do everything about the suffering and unfairness in the world, but everyone can do something” – Max Lucado

Some months ago, a female dog – Rani – was severely attacked by miscreants. She was rescued, and then handed over to Thane S.P.C.A. The dog was in a miserably sorry state: a limb hacked off, an eye gouged out, and a scapula smashed to smithereens. But, she was a fighter and she put up one of the most valiant fights we’ve ever seen in the hospital! After several surgeries and tons of TLC administered by the hospital staff, she slowly got onto her feet, and soon returned to health. Her story caught the attention of a Canadian actress who resolved to adopt her.

Around same time, Milky – another Thane S.P.C.A. mutt grew up from a battered 2-month old pup to a beautiful 2-year old girl. We had been unsuccessfully trying to rehome her, but fate seemed to have plans of her own! Her picture travelled all the way to Toronto, Canada, where a family fell in love with her and decided to adopt her.

Within a span of a week, the adoption ball suddenly began rolling. A lovely lady volunteered to accompany the dogs as pet parent and what ensued was a beautifully co-ordinate team effort including animal lovers volunteering to do everything they could for the two dogs. From co-coordinating the adoption related logistics, and undertaking all the paperwork for the quarantine office and travel, to preparing the travel kit (not an easy job!), and accompanying the dogs all the way till they boarded the plane, the entire team worked tirelessly. Finally, on the 9th of February 2017, Rani and Milky started on a long journey to Toronto with a 6-hour halt at Paris. No team member slept till news of the dogs’ successful arrival came through.

Milky is thriving now in her new Toronto home, while Rani has made herself comfortable with her new doting family in Vancouver. Someday, all animals will have a home like Milky and Rani. And they will all experience the selfless human love and service they are entitled to. That’s the dream!

Another story of teamwork and Camaraderie:

A few months back, when Thane S.P.C.A. initiated DNA sampling for their Star Tortoises, it was based on these words of Dr. Gauri Mallapur:“It may not be a legal Mandate, but it’s a Conservation Correctness Mandate.”

On this premise, Thane S.P.C.A. – after several months of follow up with the Forest Department – managed to get the go-ahead. Once again, in an exemplary example of working together, beyond personal gains, several people from several different organizations came together effortlessly. Thane SPCA, in collaboration with all these other individuals worked towards the sampling and future repatriation of the tortoises. Once the reports arrive, 200 odd Star Tortoises will be ready to be repatriated to their original habitat.Sending back wildlife to their origin is the best practice, both from the Welfare and Conservation point of view, and this could not have been possible without the exemplary efforts of the people involved.

Animal welfare works best with 5 fingers turned into a fist, and when hands are held together, rather than raised in attack. Each person in these stories had his/her role to play in nail biting drama. None of them did this with any expectation of applaud, but purely driven by love for the animals involved. And that’s what makes these stories so beautiful.

I want to take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved. It is an honor to witness selfless service in any form, and these examples come shining through.

Here’s to Camaraderie! And here’s to Unconditional Love! If you ask me, that’s a recipe for success in this, and every other area of life.

Best wishes for a year full of Karma Yog and hope,

Shreyasi Majumdar.
